Viollet-le-Duc's project was to make available to the public the historical and practical knowledge available on medieval architecture: by highlighting the principles that had inspired it, this publication would promote the emergence of a "modern" architecture.

Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc was a French architect born on January 27, 1814 in Paris. He died on September 17, 1879 in Lausanne. He is known to the general public for his restorations of medieval buildings. He is also credited with laying the foundations of modern architecture. He was Inspector General of Diocesan Buildings, Member of the Commission of Arts and Religious Buildings (in 1848), etc. Viollet-le-Duc participated in the restoration of many buildings such as the Basilica of Vézelay in 1840, the city of Carcassonne, the Cathedral of Paris, the Château de Pierrefonds, etc.

The 11th volume is an analytical table written by Henri Sabine published in 1889. (binding slightly different).
